Wilson Lake State Park

Located in the heart of the Smoky Hills, just 5 miles north of I-70 and situated on the south side of the 9,000-acre Wilson Reservoir.

One Week

This first week we have been go-go-go to make sure we make it to Southern California in time to pick up friends from the airport at the end of the month. So far we have been sleeping in parking lots – mostly Cracker Barrel and Love's – every night which isn't fun. We also try to arrive late and leave early so sleep quantity (and quality) has been not great.

The Lake

We stopped here for a break and to enjoy some nature but once I saw how empty and beautiful it was, we picked a campsite on the water where we could watch the sunset. I never intended to do much camping at campgrounds but this felt worth the less than $25. We were able to sit still, the dogs got in some good naps, I got a proper shower, we filled up on water, and I had hoped to do laundry but never found the facilities.

White van with the sliding door open with a camping chair, blanket, and two dogs laying on dog beds. It's a sunny day with blue sky.

Onward

We arrived at 2pm and left around 3pm the following day. Since we spent more time here than anticipated we skipped a few other sights I wanted to see in Kansas but I know I'll be back. I was surprisingly delighted with our travels through this state. Next up... Colorado!!
